(5) Ultrafast Nonlinear Photonics

Ultrafast all-optical devices are of great interest in optical signal processing, all-optical networks, and all-optical computing. All-optical devices have the promise of going to 10-1,000x higher speed than electronic devices because optical pulses can be as short as femtosecond in time. Ultimately, the realization of integrated all-optical devices will enable the realization of all-optical computers for which lasers will be used as the power sources. All optical devices currently suffer from high switching power, large device size, and high power consumption. We are exploring integrated all-optical devices with substantially better performances than current devices.
